Offer and Request in English Review

Last meeting in Listening class we discussed about offer and request in English. Now I want to share my understanding about this lesson.

As we know offering is to say that you are willing to do something for somebody. You can make an offer using a phrase like Can I…?, Shall I… ?, Would you like me to… ?

For example:
  • Can I get you a drink?
  • Shall I take the bags for you?
  • Would you like me to pick you up at seven tonight?

Request is to ask for something or ask somebody to do something in a polite or formal way. It's important to be polite when you ask for something. You can make a request by using: can you...?, could you...?,
will you...?, would you mind...?

For example:
  • Can you show me your photo album, please?
  • Could you possibly show me the way to the post office, please?
  • Will you lend me your book, please?
  • Would you help me with this exercise, please?
  • Would you mind lending me your pen, please?
I got the explanation above from our lecturer material and also from other sources.
